About our sponsor

Aerospace’s history in Wolverhampton dates back to 1909 when H M Hobson Ltd, originally based in London, took over a small factory in Cousins Street to make carburettors for a new engine.

During the second World War all of Hobson’s production moved to Wolverhampton to escape the bombing, and later they moved in to the Fordhouses, Stafford Road site.

In the 1970s H M Hobson was taken over by Lucas Aerospace and became their division for hydraulic and pneumatic flight control systems and equipment for the aerospace industry. Over the years the company was acquired and changed its name until it became Collins Aerospace.

Collins Aerospace, a unit of Raytheon Technologies, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defence industry.

Created in 2018 by bringing together UTC Aerospace Systems and Rockwell Collins, Collins Aerospace has the capabilities, comprehensive portfolio and expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges.

Customers of Collins Aerospace include: original equipment manufacturers, engine manufacturers, airlines, airports, business aviation owners and operators, along with defence ministries and government agencies and contractors.

Today, the Wolverhampton site is the headquarters for the Actuation Systems division of Collins Aerospace and provides the fundamental, vital, and operational capabilities that can make all flights safer and more efficient. Its innovative actuation solutions use lightweight, durable materials to control new generations of aircraft.

At the Stafford Road facility in Wolverhampton, Collins takes tremendous pride in the people who are employed there. The engineering and manufacturing talent recruited and retained at this location is a testament to the nurturing and growth mindset that is the bedrock of the organisation.

Andy Owen, site director for Actuation Systems UK, Collins Aerospace said: “We are immensely proud of our strong manufacturing and engineering history in Wolverhampton and we continue to work hard to attract local talent and grow the engineers of the future. We’ve sponsored the Manufacturing Award for a number of years and it reaffirms our commitment to the growing and diverse manufacturing talent that keeps this industry moving and developing.”
